Durable Medical Equipment Story

The Durable Medical Equipment Lending Closet began operation in June 2021 to provide re-usable medical equipment to those in need in New Braunfels and Comal County, and to receive donations of durable medical equipment for re-use.  The project is a collaboration of the New Braunfels Evening Lions Club and the Project MEND organization.

When people are injured or ill to the point of needing durable medical equipment such as crutches, walkers, wheelchairs, shower or potty chairs there are several ways to solve the need.  In some cases, medical insurance will provide the equipment.  In some cases, there are resale stores where the equipment can be purchased.

For people living in New Braunfels and Comal County who do not have insurance and are not able to purchase, the New Braunfels Evening Lions Club has teamed with the Project MEND organization to provide these types of items at no cost.  Working together these groups have established a means for used durable medical equipment to be donated and for ordered equipment to be picked up.  A doctor’s prescription must be provided to order equipment.

Project MEND (“Medical Equipment Network for those with Disabilities”) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a rich history deeply rooted in San Antonio.  Incorporated in 1993, Project MEND has provided professionally refurbished and sanitized medical equipment and other assistive technologies to individuals living with disabilities and life-altering illness in that community for over 28 years.  Part of their funding is from the Texas Veterans Commission, and they seek to provide veterans with this type of equipment at no cost.

You may call Project MEND at 210 223-6363 option 2 to request an equipment order.  Ordered items will be delivered every other Tuesday for individuals to pick up.

As the need grows, the New Braunfels Evening Lions Club will work with the Project MEND organization to increase the frequency of delivery.  If you want to donate items, please call 210 223-6363 and we will work with you to collect the items.

Special thanks go to the Walton F. Hoffmann American Legion Post 179 in New Braunfels for their generous donation of items they have been collecting.  Their generosity makes more items to be available for re-use in our community.
